AveO's Favorite Galveston Restaurants

At The AveO, we love to eat which is one reason we have perfected our cooking. The Galveston Island restaurant scene has a lot to offer. Restaurants with great views of the Gulf of Mexico; outdoor dining at the Harborside viewing Pelican Island (and sometimes Tillman Fertitta's mega yacht!); elegant indoor fine dining; and, the casual vibe of The Strand District either outside or inside of fabulously restored buildings that have survived Galveston's sometimes brutal history.

In our reviews, we will give you full details of the restaurant's location, including a Google map. We will provide you with details of the menu choices we made during our visits. Some places are frequented more than others, and we update our reviews as new experiences emerge.

We are taking the time to write careful and honest reviews of the places we have been. Keep checking in with us to see our progress. I am not a gifted content writer, so this is going to be a very long process. Eventually we will have something to say about each restaurant on the island.

We welcome your comments, as well. Email avenueo@att.net with your opinion of our local restaurants to have your review published here!

Katie's Seafood House

Picture
When you want fresh off the boat seafood, look no further than Katie's. Katie's is located at Harborside & 20th, right beside Katie's Seafood Market. One of the best happy hour menus on the island, too. Their Snapper Wings are a must try!!

Number 13 Prime Steak and Seafood

Picture
Number 13 Prime Steak and Seafood offers a unique experience for guests. Their culinary talent prepares perfectly cooked food using fresh ingredients. Five-star service in an elegant relaxing atmosphere complete the experience. More details here!

BLVD. Seafood

Picture
BLVD. Seafood is where islanders go for good food in a relaxing atmosphere.   Executive Chef Chris Lopez, a restaurant veteran, has created a menu that will delight both your eyes and your taste buds. Be sure to order a specialty cocktail; you will not be disappointed. #blvdDLux'

Kriticos Grill

Picture
Kriticos Grill at 49th & Seawall is where you want to go for Greek cuisine. The food is incredible, and floor to ceiling windows overlook the seawall. This is a small family-run business that has fed Galveston Island for decades. Dine-in, To Go, and Catering is offered.

Gaido's

Picture
Gaido's has been a Galveston tradition since 1911. They have remained relevant throughout the years in both presentation and service. Gaido's is the place for fresh seafood prepared by hand in a classic atmosphere. Before you are seated in your table with a Gulf-view, be sure to check out the Galveston history display. Consistently excellent food and service! Reservations are recommended.

Pho 20

Picture
Pho 20 is our go-to Vietnamese
Restaurant. Their service is always great and the food is consistently good.  Pho 20 is only an eight block walk from the AveO. Absolutely love this place. Did I mention the dining room is surrounded in the most beautiful elegant crown molding I have ever seen? Open for lunch and dinner.

Old Moon Deli & Pies

Picture
Old Moon Deli & Pies has become our go-to sandwich shop. They make a crave-worthy sandwich stuffed full of yummy fresh ingredients. Old Moon Deli is open for lunch only. They have a couple of tables where you can dine outdoors with your dog. Inside is comfy and inviting. Plus, you can watch the master assembly of treats. Their tea is amazing! To-go is also offered. Love this place!!

Yaga's Cafe

Picture
Yaga´s, at Strand and 23rd, is our place to go for salads. Their extensive menu includes all kinds of great eats, but their salads are the bomb!! Try the Strawberry Cider Salad with Chicken or Salmon with Mango dressing. They are known for their sandwiches and pizzas. There is a large outdoor patio here and they are extremely dog friendly. Yagas Group also owns BLVD Seafood, Beerfoot Brewery, Tsunami, and Float. Join their Rewards Club for free food!

Shrimp n Stuff

Picture
This family restaurant has two locations. At Ave O & 39th is the original Shrimp n Stuff serving up fried seafood. A food truck at Jamaica Beach offers up similar affair. Shrimp n Stuff Downtown at 25th & Ball has a variety of fresh seafood and stuff with table service. The food is awesome. They have a happy hour menu that will fill you up for less than $15.

Trattoria La Vigna

Picture
Trattoria La Vigna is our very own little slice of Italy in downtown Galveston. Fresh pasta made daily and homemade desserts are just the beginning at this family-owned restaurant. Find them at 20th and Market Street downtown.

Fish Company Taco

Picture
Chef Daya Myers-Hurt has such a gift! She opened this tiny restaurant on 23rd St. that used to be my secret. Daya's motto is "Chef Driven. Farm Loving. Gulf to Table." She literally gets the fish from the dock, cleans and filets it, then works her magic with the fish and sauces. Word got out about my spot and now you have to arrive by 1pm before she is sold out.  Open for dine-in, take-out, and outdoor seating if you bring the pup!

Mosquito Cafe

Original Mexican Cafe

Hearsay on the Strand

Picture
The Strand and 24th Street is where you can find some great food! Hearsay has an excellent menu. The building is gorgeous, complete with a large bar area, and outdoor seating. The food is cooked to perfection. Their weekly specials are amazing, like Wagyu Burgers on Tuesdays, or Fried Chicken or Shrimp on Mondays. Thursday is Steak Night!

Willie G's Seafood & Steaks

Willie G's has a big billboard on I-45 that says they have the best happy hour on the island. I must agree it is in the top 5. We exclusively go to Willie G's for their Happy Hour Menu. They have a great dinner menu, but we prefer the happy hour portions and prices. It can be difficult to find a seat for happy hour, however, because it is available at the bar and limited outdoor seating only. During the off-season, they will open up part of the dining room for happy hour.
